We have all fallen victim of a luring commercial, enticing anti-aging label, a wrinkle free product. And although we don’t like to admit it, for some reason still want to believe there is a miracle product out there to fix our wrinkles, acne, scars, uneven skin, cellulite, hair loss, and so much more.
Why is it we become victim to fancy labels, name brands, and catchy ads? We purchase them in hopes that it will really work. We are constantly loading up on the free samples from the mall, samples from our local beauty store, so it becomes easy to pick up one more from the local Wal-Greens. After all, the label says it will work instantly!
Before you know it, you’ve become a product WHORE. I love to try new products too, but did you know most of what you have in your cabinets and spilling out of your bathroom mirrors is most likely expired junk?
A 2013 study published in International Journal of Cosmetic Science evaluated the makeup routines and habits of 44 women (18-28). They found that 70% percent of women in the study used some type of expired products.
Researchers sampled the eye makeup for contamination and found that 67 percent contained potentially harmful levels of microorganisms, including: Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium and Moraxella, all common in bacterial skin infections.
PAO= Period after Opening
Most products have a shelf life of 6 months to a 1-year! That’s right, your eye cream your best friend gave you to try has mostly likely has expired.
It is important when shopping for new products that work, to read the back label. The first product listed is the most potent ingredient in the product, so if you read water…. it is likely that the product will not be very effective. Be realistic when shopping for new products to try. Products can only do so much, the real magic happens when you maintain your skin regimen. This means regular visits to your local medical aesthetic office, religious use of sunscreen, and healthy home care habits.
I am a big believer in medical grade products, but I am also the first to advocate that less is more. I refuse to have to perform 6 applications or steps before I go to bed. So take time this spring to dump out your expired, discolored, oxidized products.
